I heartily recommend that fans of good food and fine wine attend one of the many entertaining events during the 10th Anniversary Wine & Food Week. The following press release provides more information:

If drinking a fine wine is like magic —mysterious, spellbinding, and hypnotic — celebrating 10 magical years of Wine & Food Week will be nothing short of supernatural. Drawing culinary masters and wine experts from around the world, Wine & Food Week uncorks June 2-8 with scores of events featuring more than 500 wines, 50 restaurants, and legendary wine producers and culinary personalities.

Special guests abound as Wine & Food Week named industry icon Gary Midyette as Wine Wizard 2014. Midyette is Director of Winemaking Operations at Robert Mondavi Winery, having worked hand-in-hand with Robert Monday for 30 years. On the culinary side, former White House Chef John Moeller will assume hosting duties as Wizard Gourmet. In his distinguished career, Moeller served President George H.W. Bush, President William Jefferson Clinton, and President George W. Bush, as well as heads of state from around the world. Other special guests include The Royal Chef, chef to the Royal Family in Great Britain Darren McGrady; The Count at Buena Vista Winery; Randy and Charlene Lange of LangeTwins Winery; plus dozens of winemakers from Texas and beyond and more than a dozen esteemed culinary critics who serve as judges for the various competitions.

Wine & Food Week’s traditional big three events include the H-E-B Wine Walk @ Market Street on Thursday, June 5, a taste and stroll experience in a European-style center featuring wine and light bites at more than 30 tasting stations; Sips, Suds & Sliders, presented by The Woodlands Mall, a Texas-size celebration featuring live music, specialty beers, value wines and a gourmet slider competition on Friday, June 6; and the ultimate adult evening: The Wine Rendezvous Grand Tasting & Chef Showcase on June 7. Presented by Capital One Bank, guests will sample delectable cuisine and hundreds of wines as chefs representing more than 50 restaurants compete for Wine & Food Week’s Waterford Crystal Chef of Chefs Award and a $5,000 cash prize. To complete the evening, the epicurean experience culminates with the “Just Desserts” contest, a confectionary competition to crown the night’s dessert extraordinaire.

Adding to the magical plans are unique events honoring this special anniversary. Author George Taber will host a dinner and reenactment of the 1976 wine tasting in Paris that put California wines on the map. Chronicled in his book Judgment of Paris, Taber will reenact the tasting and provide personal anecdotes from his first-hand experience on Monday, June 2.

A not-to-be-missed and extremely rare tasting event will be held Wednesday, June 4 at The Refuge Bar & Bistro when one of America’s most esteemed wine writers, Denman Moody, conducts a vertical tasting of three Jordan Chardonnays — 2012, 2011 and 2009 — and three vintages of Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon — 2010, 2009 and 2006 (the first vintage produced after Tom Jordan handed over the reins to his son John). This will be a unique perspective, as Moody tasted the first three Cabernets produced — ’76, ’77 and ’78 — with Sally and Tom Jordan at the winery on November 29, 1979, and has followed the evolution of this iconic winery since its inception. An assortment of perfectly pairing cheeses will be served with each varietal.

This tasting is strictly limited to 36 participants. Each participant will also receive a signed copy of Denman’s book, The Advanced Oenophile, which recently won “Best Wine and Food Book” from the National Association of Book Entrepreneurs. Cost is $100 per person.
