Mayakoba offers eco-friendly family fun in Riviera Maya

By Elizabeth Anthony

Mayakoba is located in romantic and picturesque Riviera Maya, Mexico’s foremost beach destination fronting the Caribbean Sea and only a short 40-minute drive from Cancun International Airport. Along this coast, home to the second-largest coral reef in the world, Mayakoba is distinctive for being a well-appointed, secure, safe and carefully maintained ecosystem of dunes, mangroves and freshwater lagoons — home to myriad indigenous species of fish, birds and mammals.

Mayakoba is home to three luxury hotels — Fairmont Mayakoba, Rosewood Mayakoba and Banyan Tree — which are surrounded by six miles of freshwater lagoons that connect the resort properties and entice guests to the white sugar sand beaches and turquoise waters of the Caribbean.

Settling in at Mayakoba is easy with three options for luxury accommodations:

Fairmont Mayakoba is a AAA Five Diamond award-winning property that offers 401 rooms and suites, including a collection of beach and lagoon casitas; six restaurants, including the AAA Four Diamond Award winners, Las Brisas and El Puerto Restaurant; and the 37,000-square-foot Willow Stream Spa featuring 20 treatment rooms, including a unique suite for couples, two mineral pools and steam rooms.

Rosewood Mayakoba sits in the heart of a 1,600-acre resort enclave along winding lagoons and a mile-long arc of pristine beach. This oasis offers 128 suites with private plunge pools, rooftop sundecks, garden showers, individual docks and the finest in-room design and details. Resort amenities include fine dining at Casa del Lago and Punta Bonita; Rose Buds for Children; and Sense, A Rosewood Spa, which is designed around a cenote, one of the sacred water wells of the ancient Mayans, and situated on a private island.

Banyan Tree Mayakoba serves up 132 pool villas discreetly built into the carefully conserved landscape, which preserves four ecosystems in balance — the mangroves, dunes, low forests and coral reefs. This property is ideal for honeymoons, holidays, wedding parties, meeting groups and other gatherings. In addition to the assortment of rejuvenating massages and beauty treatments inspired by traditional Asian remedies, the world-renowned Banyan Tree Spa also brought The Rainforest experience to Mayakoba, which offers spa patrons a choice of eight hydrotherapy treatments. Each signature restaurant at Banyan Tree caters to the taste buds and cravings of guests, from authentic Thai and Asian favorites at Saffron, to the healthy, hearty eclectic cuisine at Tamarind.

El Camaleón Mayakoba Golf Club, designed by Greg Norman, proudly hosts the only PGA Tour event in México — the OHL Classic at Mayakoba — and is home to Mexico’s only Jim McLean Golf School. El Camaleón is unique, not just to Mexico but to the entire world of golf, due to the three different landscapes which confront golfers of any skill level.

Mayakoba Residences — Mayakoba Residences offers completed Banyan Tree residences (full ownership with prices from $1.15 million and rental program option), Rosewood residences (full ownership with prices from $2.5 million) and the newly developed Fairmont Heritage Place (fractional ownership starting at $179,000) including lagoon and ocean front locations. Owners enjoy all the services and amenities from the entire Mayakoba Resort.

Fairmont Heritage Place — The luxury residences of the Fairmont Heritage Place are the most recent development within Mayakoba. This luxury real estate offers the perfect family setting for visitors to enjoy the amenities of the Mayakoba Resort as well as the benefits of membership in the exclusive Fairmont President’s Circle program. Buyers can select from 3-and 4-bedroom residences surrounded by Mayakoba’s celebrated biosphere through fractional ownership. Designed by SB Architects, the spacious residences are sold in 1/12 fractions with a starting price of $179,000.

“We are very excited about Fairmont Heritage Place,” said Mayakoba’s General Manager, Agustín Sarasola. “We certainly had high expectations from the plans, but I think I can genuinely say that these are now some of the finest residences I have seen in the Caribbean and they are a worthy addition to Mayakoba.”

“The 3 & 4 bedroom Villas are spectacular,” said Lifestyles & Homes Publisher, Bill Anderson.

Mayakoba Resort also offers families a new way to enjoy one of Mother Nature’s most picturesque beach-side playgrounds: Camp Mayakoba, a collection of new outdoor amenities and programming available to all guests of the resort. Activities include kayaking, archery, hiking, croquet and tennis.

Located in the heart of Mayakoba, “El Pueblito” was designed after an authentic Mexican village square with a mix of sidewalk restaurants, boutiques and an art gallery. Opening in August 2015, it is an exquisitely beautiful setting for a relaxing afternoon within the Mayakoba community. “El Pueblito” and its colonial style is the newest attraction of Mayakoba and will become a favorite location for gatherings, casual dining, shopping, weddings and fun for the whole family.

“El Pueblito was created to provide a welcoming, comfortable space where Mayakoba guests can relax and be entertained, or grab an ice cream cone and wander leisurely around the shops and galleries. elpueblito@mayakoba.com
