A “Land Of Enchantment” Beckons With Family Friendly Resorts

There’s a reason New Mexico’s nickname is “Land of Enchantment.”  New Mexico offers skiing and snowboarding on the slopes of world-class mountains. Favored for some of the most welcoming accommodations in the nation, visitors to these lower Rockies enjoy entertainment and cuisine to heighten the best of vacation experiences. Read ahead as we introduce four resorts sure to make lifelong fans of those who visit the southern Rocky Mountains.

Ski Santa Fe

High in the sky! From dining to equipment rentals, a friendly and helpful staff makes the elevated experience at Ski Santa Fe even more enjoyable. Strap on the skis, frolic or beat your personal best, and then try lunch at La Casa Sun Room. You’ll want to tackle the slopes once again for afternoon ski instruction or free ski. The views are heavenly, as Ski Santa Fe is nestled in the extreme altitudes of the beautiful Sangre de Cristo Mountains just 16 miles from the heart of historic Santa Fe, New Mexico. With a base area elevation of 10,350 feet, it’s among the highest ski areas in the continental United States.

And speaking of heights, the Millennium Triple Chairlift will take snow sport enthusiasts to 12,075 feet and some of the southwest’s finest skiing. The vistas atop Ski Santa Fe are unsurpassed and act as the gateway for thrills, including steep bump runs, powder filled chutes, gladed tree-skiing, and plenty of groomers. Local patrons and visitors from around the world can all find something for their taste, whether a first time skier/boarder or seasoned veteran. Complete service for all levels of participants awaits.

Oh, and dinner at St. Bernard is always a treat, featuring international cuisine and renowned chefs. Meals are served table d’hôte.

Angel Fire Resort

A winter vacation, especially on the slopes of the Angel Fire Resort, can be a rewarding family experience. The resort embraces hungry travelers with crisp air mixed with luscious aromas, rivaled only by the wonderful amenities and a variety of activities. As a top year-round mountain resort destination, the outdoors offers breathtaking sports adventures. Skiing and snowboarding take center stage, but snowmobile excursions, sleigh rides, ice fishing, horseback riding and torchlight parades also entertain winter guests and nature enthusiasts. Families are welcomed and kiddos especially love the winter wonderland.

During a mountaintop adventure above the clouds, enjoy breakfast at the Angel Fire Coffee Houston, lunch at the Sunset Grill and dinner at Stonewood Wine Room, all conveniently located at the Angel Fire Resort Golf & Country Club. You’ll love Summit House and Cowgirl BBQ, too. And don’t forget the Allegria Medi Spa to soothe and relax muscles after a full day of fun.  Warmer weather sports include mountain biking, tennis, fishing, hiking and more. The beauty in and around Angel Fire Resort lures visitors away from the fireplace and into the great outdoors.

Taos Ski Valley

The abundance of lodging (suites, condominiums, lodges and spas) is rivaled only by the abundance of snow at Taos Ski Valley. It’s good to get away, and first things first: Try breakfast and equipment rentals at TKF’s, followed by ski instruction or free ski. There’s a lot to do atop the mountain. In fact, Lower Front Side, Upper Front Side, Back Side, Highline Ridge and West Basin Ridge each blend charming mountainsides with challenging downhill adventures.

Kids’ programs, adult programs and even snow sports camps make Taos Ski Valley a memory maker for the whole bunch. And when hunger strikes, try lunch at Tim’s Stray Dog Café. Inevitably, groups fall into friendships, with some returning year after year for the varying degrees of difficulty as well as the ambiance of mountain towns that offer both luxury and utility.

When the weather permits, how about a midnight hike to Williams Lake? Or a performance by the Taos School of Music? Field trip adventures and fitness expos help keep health a focus during a boisterous vacation. But there’s more to Taos than muscle and adrenaline. For instance, creativity thrives in the architecture, the written word, the musical scores, even the culinary arts.

Red River Resort

Talk about convenience! This ski-in, ski-out town is all about proximity. Eighty percent of the village’s 6,000 rooms are within walking distance of lifts that can be accessed off Main Street. There, shops, museums and galleries are tucked away at the base of the mountains. Take some time to stroll through town, perhaps arm in arm with a loved one, or perhaps herding your brood. Either way, togetherness is redefined at the Red River Resort, your home away from home.

Breakfast at the Red River Inn is followed by a mountain guide or ski instruction, which is sure to work up the appetite once more. Cool off and chill out during lunch at the Lift House and Bar, which is sure to satisfy. For fun, it’s located at the base of the “Face” and platinum chair lift.

Chances are, four hours later it will be time for dinner at Capo’s “Ristorante Italiano,” showcasing custom-made sauces and authentic Italian recipes that rule the day. The excellent food and superior service really are the main dishes. After all, hard-charging skiers deserve full tummies and some gastronomic pleasure.
